The new permanent 14th & Main Plaza is officially finished! This plaza began construction from a temporary plaza to a permanent one 9 months ago and there have been a ton of amazing new features added to the space since.
The City of Vancouver has incorporated green rainwater infrastructure into the new plaza, reducing the amount of water entering our sewer system to prevent flooding, as well as allowing the natural water management process to occur. The temporary bike lane in the plaza before has now been permanently installed as well, with pavement being added to raise the entire plaza and bike lane to sidewalk height, creating a cohesive space that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists.
Electrical upgrades have been added to support decorative lighting features and events hosted at the plaza. A variety of seating options have been installed as well to accommodate event capacity and every day use, plus a permanent water fountain.
The Mount Pleasant BIA has been working to get plazas like 14th & Main installed all over the neighbourhood, and have already had so much success with the ones that have been put in. These plaza’s are great for people that don’t have access to outdoor spaces in their own homes. They encourage people to pause, unwind, and spend more time in the neighbourhood than they would have otherwise. They increase foot traffic in busy areas surrounding the plaza’s and help to slow down and decrease vehicle traffic on side streets. The 14th & Main plaza being permanently installed is a reflection of the success that these plazas have had in the community.
Plaza Kick-Off!
To celebrate the plaza’s official completion, The Mount Pleasant BIA is hosting a kick-off party at the 14th & Main Plaza on June 25th! The event is from 3-6PM and will feature amazing food and treats from nearby businesses and music from DJ Eclectik all evening long. Dog Meister will be giving away free hot dogs and there will be free ice cream from Kobo Ice Cream. The two businesses on either side of the plaza, JJ Bean and Forecast Coffee will also be providing a few treats throughout the evening.
