It’s the Start of Spooky Season on Main Street: Meet Vancouver Authors Marcus Kliewer and Aoife Josie Clements
As the days get shorter and fall settles into Vancouver, the Mount Pleasant BIA is bringing one more outdoor plaza event to the new 27th & Main Plaza – and this one is for anyone who likes their autumn evenings with a little bit of mystery.
Join us at 6 PM at the Main & 27th Plaza for our final Author Talk of the year, featuring Vancouver-based writers Marcus Kliewer and Aoife Josie Clements.
Our Author Talks are all about bringing local writers and readers together for relaxed conversations about books, writing, creativity and the communities that inspire them. For this edition, we’re leaning into spooky season with two authors whose work explores psychological horror, paranoia, unsettling possibilities and the blurry line between reality and imagination.
Meet the Authors & Host
Marcus Kliewer
If you’ve spent any time around contemporary horror, you may already know Marcus Kliewer from his debut novel, We Used to Live Here. The Vancouver-based writer and stop-motion animator originally published the story as a serialized work on Reddit before it caught the attention of readers and the film industry. The novel was subsequently published by Simon & Schuster, with its film rights acquired by Netflix.
Kliewer’s second novel, The Caretaker, takes readers into another unsettling situation: a young woman accepts a short-term caretaking job at a secluded house, only to discover that there may be something much more sinister waiting for her there. The novel blends supernatural horror with psychological unease, making it a fitting addition to a conversation about what happens when the familiar starts to feel very, very wrong.
Aoife Josie Clements
Joining Marcus is Vancouver-based author and musician Aoife Josie Clements, whose debut novel Persona was published by LittlePuss Press in January 2026.
Persona is an intricately layered work of literary horror that moves through internet culture, isolation, identity and the unsettling possibilities of a world where you can no longer be sure that what you’re seeing is what you think it is. The story follows two young trans women whose lives become entangled through a series of increasingly strange and disturbing discoveries.
James Avramenko
Helping guide the conversation is James Avramenko, writer, poet, teacher and creator and host of the Friendless podcast.
James is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans publishing, theatre, visual art and audio. Through Friendless, they explore connection, self-discovery and the conversations that help us make sense of being human. The podcast has also become a place for James to sit down with Vancouver authors, artists and other local voices – including a growing series of live conversations recorded at Book Warehouse on Main Street.
A Fall Evening on Main Street
We’ll be gathering outdoors at Main & 27th Plaza at 6 PM, with wine, non-alcoholic drinks and treats to enjoy while we settle in for the conversation.
We’re hoping for that perfect crisp Vancouver fall evening, the kind where you can throw on a sweater, grab a drink and settle in for a good conversation as the sun goes down. 🍂
And, because Vancouver weather likes to keep us guessing, if the weather is truly awful, the Author Talk will move indoors to Book Warehouse across the street.
Whether you’re a dedicated horror reader, curious about the writing process, looking for a new local author to add to your reading list, or simply want to spend an evening on Main Street, we’d love to have you join us.
Come meet two Vancouver writers, talk books and writing, and get into spooky-season!
