The Annual Main Street Car Free Day was a success as it brought the Mount Pleasant community together for a fourth time! Thank you all who came to Main Street Car Free Day 2011!

On Sunday, June 19th, 2011 Main Street closed for an impressive 18 blocks, from 12th to 29th from noon to 8 pm, making it the biggest and most ambitious of the four festivals. The Main Street Car Free Day 2011 Festival brought thousands of people to our community, while highlighting our neighbourhood’s diversity, community, and spirit.

Father’s Day is becoming synonymous with Car Free Festivals around the city, with celebrations held on Main Street, Denman Street, Kitsilano, and Commercial Drive, where the festivities were first started by community volunteers in 2005. This event is 100% volunteer organized and run by an amazing group of dedicated individuals whose goal is to create a car-free, celebratory, fun-for-free, local community event.

Entertainment and exhibitors on Main Street included:

  •  Veg Fest Vancouver with vegan food vendors
  • Olio Festival movie tent, Chinese Cultural Festival
  • Pacey’s Pianos grand piano recitals
  • Community discussion groups
  • Yoga and salsa dance
  • A French District
  • A wide variety of street vendors
  • A multitude of live bands at seven stages

There was a ton of free stuff for the kids, including Granville Island Toy Kids Zone, Street Hockey, Kids bike rodeo, giveaways, and much more. The Mount Pleasant BIA partnered with the organizers again this year, co-sponsoring the Beaumont Studios stage and picnic area on the street and giving away free popcorn, cotton candy, and toys for the kids. This booth could not have been more popular! Many of our merchants set up booths on the street and even more offered specials to event attendees. Main Street Car Free Festival is a fabulous event that you will not want to miss. Mark Sunday, June 17th, 2012 on your calendar and come out to enjoy this great day and all that Main Street has to offer.
